Whatever your age it’s my belief that anyone can learn to play a musical instrument. This belief manifests itself in a relaxed and friendly teaching style that focuses on helping you achieve your musical goals.
I provide 1 to 1 tuition in my students homes with each lesson uniquely tailored to the students needs and goals. Lessons are structured so that you are working on material that is in-line with what you want to achieve, in addition to subjects that will help supplement your objectives as a musician.
I accept students of all ages and abilities, whether you want to learn your favourite songs, complete grades or write your own music, I will be able to help you achieve those goals.
I am CRB checked and a member of the registry of guitar tutors (RGT). Typically I work with Trinity and London College of Music grades however I’m happy to use whatever system suits your needs best.
I started playing guitar at the age of 7, and 16 years later it is still my main passion. During this time I’ve learned my favourite songs, played in bands, written my own music, and for two years, sought to pass on my knowledge by teaching.
My main interests on the guitar are in rock and jazz playing. However I’m always pushing myself to learn new things on the instrument, be that theory concepts or technique. I’m deeply passionate about the guitar and I always intend to have that enthusiasm pass onto my students.
In my time teaching I’ve taken on students from the ages of 6 to 60. Every student has their own needs and goals, and even though the learning curve can sometimes be steep, every student has the capability to learn to play guitar (or any instrument for that matter) if the tuition is tailored specifically for them. My mission as a teacher is to ensure that anyone who wants to learn to play guitar can do so, and to achieve this I ensure that my lessons are uniquely tailored to your requirements.

Comments from my private students
I’d been trying to learn guitar for years but was too nervous to play in front of anybody when I started at Olicana music with Alasdair. His friendly, patient, encouraging and incredibly knowledgeable approach has worked wonders. He always goes the extra mile finding material that suits me and answers to questions between lessons. 3 months on from starting and I’ve begun writing my own music and I’m lined up to publicly play my guitar at my first ever open mic night! Can’t recommend Alasdair highly enough.Rose Bridgewater
Alasdair has been teaching my son the guitar for a few months now and I have no hesitation in recommending him as a teacher. He is friendly, reliable, punctual and clearly a gifted musician and teacher – my son is shy and does not usually like extra-curricular activities, and yet he always looks forward to his weekly lesson with Alasdair. He has also progressed very quickly under his encouraging and well-directed tuition. The fact Alasdair is willing to come to our house is another massive plus point for me, as it means I do not need to drag my younger daughter out.Elaine Proudlove
Alasdair teaches my son guitar once a week. He is a reliable and professional teacher who has great coaching skills. He is able to adapt his teaching skills to engage and hold my sons concentration. They work together in a relaxed manner at my sons pace and enjoy the music that they play. In my sons words: “Alasdair is an awesome guitar player and gives me loads of tips on how to get better” I would highly recommend him.Chole Fisher
Alasdair has been my guitar teacher every week for nearly a year now. He communicates clearly, encourages when necessary, sticks to the brief, and backs up the lessons with additional support. As a result, an old passion has been rekindled and my guitar playing has come on in leaps and bounds. He is an excellent teacher and I can thoroughly recommend him.
